Demystifying the Financials

Using a case study, we will understand how to read and use financial statements. With the case study as real-world context, we will also learn about projections, inventory, accounts receivable, and cash flow and how to use this information to build stronger businesses.

With a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami, Elsa combines her extensive educational background with over two decades of legal experience to deliver exceptional, personalized estate planning and business formation services.  

As a business owner, Elsa excels in multiple leadership roles, managing her firm with a dynamic and strategic approach. Her leadership extends beyond her practice; she is an active Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) member, serving on the Section Council for the Estate and Trust Law Section, the MSBA Board of Governors, and the MSBA Budget and Finance Committee. Her dedication to leadership is further exemplified by her tenure on the Prince George’s County Bar Association’s Board of Directors from 2014 to 2018 and her recognition as one of the Top Ten Business Women of 2021 by the American Business Women’s Association. Most recently, she chaired the MSBA Estate and Trust Law Section’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Charles (Chuck) Borek

J.D., MBA, CPA

Legal Finance Expert

Charles A. (“Chuck”) Borek has been a leader in professional education since founding The Borek Group in 2011, addressing the training and continuing education needs of attorneys, CPAs, and other professionals. Chuck has developed and presented over 1,000 seminars, webinars, and training sessions across nearly every state and at four universities. His course materials and presentations have benefited the Association of International Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the American Law Institute, Fortune 500 companies, “Big Four” accounting firms, the National Constitution Law Center, and many other organizations.

In addition to course materials, Chuck has published articles in industry and association periodicals, as well as legal and tax scholarship in various university law reviews. He earned his law degree summa cum laude in 1993, along with an M.B.A., and was soon recruited to teach law courses. Throughout his 30-year career, Chuck has practiced in large and small law firms and a regional CPA firm in the Washington, DC area. He currently practices as Associate General Counsel for FreeWill Co., a social impact tech company that facilitates charitable giving.

Outside his professional work, Chuck has a diverse array of interests. He holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Creative Writing and Theology from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts in Theology and the Arts from Wesley Theological Seminary. He frequently travels to Ireland and supports Jesuit missions in India. Chuck and his wife Lori  have four children, two grandchildren, and two dogs.

John received his MBA from The Wharton School and holds a Master’s from Dartmouth.

Who is the Program for?

This information is beneficial for everyone, from the "CEO to the sweeper". 

Essentially the more of your team that understands these fundamentals, the better off your firm will be. However, if you want to start slow, we suggest that partners specifically interested in management & finance training, those in management roles,  and those younger future leaders with high potential are those you start with.

In an ideal world, they go through this program together as a unit for the most impactful outcomes.

How long will it take me to complete? Per section & in total?

Weekly you should expect about 2.5 hours per week, but self-paced learning is all up to your availability! 

Then bi-weekly we have 60-minute long live sessions with your peers and industry experts. 

Overall, you should expect anywhere from 20-40 hours over the 10-weeks. (Some learners spend much longer than this and some a little less, but it depends on where you are at in your professional journey)!

How many people from my team should participate? 

Beyond being a great learning program this is an organizational alignment tool meaning that the more people who participate together, the better the impact you'll see when looking to implement these learnings.

What if I miss the live sessions?

While you will get the most out of joining them and participating in the conversation with both your peers and industry experts, if you can't make one do not worry! All sessions are recorded and uploaded into the eLearning to review later.

How long will I have access to the program?

Great question, while the program runs in a synchronous timing with your peers after the 10-weeks you will retain access as it does not expire!

Are there assignments & testing?

You won't get a certificate just for signing up, no participation trophies here! 

Throughout the program there are 6 end-of-section knowledge checks at the end of each of the management sections, and then a cumulative exam at the end. All must be completed and passed in order to receive your certificate.
